The Weave
One rug. Five months. A lifetime of use.
Every Raihan rug begins on a horizontal loom in Aqcha, Mazar-i-Sharif, Andkhoy, or Kunduz — provinces where weaving knowledge has passed hand-to-hand for ten generations.
A master weaver ties between 100 and 180 knots into each square inch, by hand. A 9'×12' rug runs five to nine months from warp to finishing.
Then it ships to our Boston atelier, where we review every piece before it is listed.

The hands behind the knots
Woven by women we hire, train, and pay directly.
In Afghanistan, nearly nine in ten carpet weavers are women — a craft passed from mother to daughter at looms inside family homes. Our partner workshops in the north hire women, train new weavers in the full discipline of the craft, and pay them directly. No middlemen.
Every rug you bring home keeps a loom working.

Choosing well
Four rules of thumb.
Size up
When in doubt, the larger rug wins. Small rugs make big rooms feel smaller.
Wool lives well
Lanolin-rich wool resists stains and traffic — it's why heirlooms survive.
Pattern forgives
A patterned hand-knot hides life: kids, pets, dinner parties.
Anchor the furniture
Front legs on the rug, always. The room knits together.

The atelier
A Boston atelier with looms in Afghanistan.
Raihan Rugs began with a simple refusal: no middlemen, no anonymous inventory. We work directly with weaving families in northern Afghanistan — many of them women we hire and train — and review every piece in Boston before it carries our name.
Boston atelier
See it in person. By appointment.
We curate from our Boston atelier — quiet, by appointment, for Beacon Hill brownstones, Back Bay flats, Cambridge triple-deckers, Brookline brick, and Wellesley colonials.
Bring a swatch, a paint chip, a photograph. We'll prepare a selection of three to five rugs the day before, walk you through provenance, and arrange white-glove delivery.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Buying a hand-knotted rug is a long-form decision. These are the questions buyers and designers ask us most.
Are Raihan rugs hand-knotted?
Yes. Every rug is hand-knotted on traditional looms — horizontal ground looms in the Aqcha village tradition, and vertical frames in our partner workshops by master weavers in northern Afghanistan (Aqcha, Mazar-i-Sharif, Andkhoy, Balkh, Kunduz) or Turkey. We do not sell tufted, machine-made, or hand-loomed pieces. Each rug's KPSI and foundation are listed on the product page.
How long does it take to weave one rug?
A 9'×12' wool rug at 120 KPSI takes a master weaver five to nine months working ~8 hours a day. Finer pieces (160+ KPSI) and oversized rugs run twelve to eighteen months. Smaller runners and 5'×8' pieces take two to four months.
What's the price range at Raihan Rugs?
Current inventory ranges from approximately $450 (small tribal pieces and runners, from 5'×8' tribal pieces) to $18,000+ (oversized fine Oushak and Mamluk; museum-grade antiques are priced individually). Most living-room sizes fall in the $2,800–$5,500 range. Trade pricing applies to verified interior designers — see our Trade Program.
Do you ship outside the United States?
No. Raihan Rugs ships exclusively within the United States. Free white-glove delivery to all 50 states, fully insured, with signature receipt. International shipping is not offered because our concierge service requires direct U.S. logistics partners and our 14-day at-home approval requires domestic returns.
What is your return policy?
We offer a 14-day at-home approval period. If a rug doesn't suit your space, return it within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, less return shipping. The rug must be in original condition. Trade purchases follow the same 14-day terms.
Where are your rugs made?
Hand-knotted in five regions of northern Afghanistan: Aqcha (Mamluk tradition), Mazar-i-Sharif (Oushak and finer pieces), Andkhoy (Khal-Mohammadi tribal), Balkh (silk-touch wool), and Kunduz (Persian-influenced). We also carry select Turkish Oushak reproductions and antique Persian pieces with documented provenance. See Behind the Loom.
Do you offer a trade program for interior designers?
Yes. Verified interior designers, architects, and design firms (including AD-100 members) receive trade pricing, NET-30 terms, memo samples, and dedicated concierge support. Applications reviewed within one business day. Apply to the Trade Program.
What size rug do I need for a living room?
The rug should extend at least 6 inches under the front legs of all major seating pieces — or fully under all furniture if the room allows. For an 8' sofa with two flanking chairs, 8'×10' is the entry size; 9'×12' is more generous. For open-plan rooms, consider 10'×14' or 12'×15'. Boston brownstone living rooms typically need 9'×12'.
What size rug fits most living rooms?
An 8×10 suits most living rooms — front legs of the sofa on the rug. Larger open plans take a 9×12 or 10×14. Our Rug Size Guide covers every room.
How should I care for a hand-knotted wool rug?
Vacuum without a beater bar, rotate twice a year, blot spills immediately, and have it professionally cleaned every 2–4 years. Wool's natural lanolin resists stains.
