Hand-woven Kilim rugs — flat-weave, reversible, the oldest continuous textile tradition in the rug-weaving world. Tribal Uzbek, Afghan, Anatolian, and Persian provenance. Every piece ships with a written provenance certificate.
A Kilim is a flat-woven rug — no pile, no knots — created by the interweaving of warp and weft threads. The technique pre-dates pile-knotting by several thousand years, and Kilims have been woven across Central Asia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Persia for over 4,000 years. The flat-weave construction is reversible, lightweight, and well-suited to high-traffic areas, hallways, dining rooms over hardwood, and layered styling under pile rugs.
Construction. No knots; the design is created by the weft thread changing color, often with small slits left at the color boundaries.
Reversibility. Both faces of a true Kilim are usable. Two rugs in one.
Drape and weight. A Kilim is lighter than a pile rug of the same size. It can be hung as a tapestry, used as a throw, or layered as the under-rug beneath a smaller pile piece.
Wear pattern. Because there is no pile to compress, Kilims age by softening rather than by depilation — they typically look more beautiful at 30 years old than at 3.
Most of the Kilims here are tribal Uzbek pieces from northern Afghanistan, woven on horizontal looms in remote villages. Geometric vocabulary, hand-spun Ghazni wool, vegetable dyes. The smaller Kilim runners are particularly well-suited to American hallways and behind-the-sofa applications.
Kilims are correct in hallways, kitchens, breakfast rooms, secondary living rooms, and as wall hangings. For a primary living-room rug we usually recommend a pile piece for the underfoot softness; for everywhere else, a Kilim is often the better, lower-fuss answer.
