About this piece

A grand Mamluk rug that honors the sophisticated geometric vocabulary of 16th-century Cairo—museum-grade design executed with contemporary Afghan craftsmanship.

Craftsmanship & Provenance
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan by artisans trained in the intricate Mamluk tradition, this 8.2' × 9.8' piece reflects the disciplined geometry and refined color palette of historical Mamluk court weavings. The design—with its radiating medallions, interlocking stars, and precise symmetry—requires exceptional technical skill and pattern memory. Woven on a traditional vertical loom with meticulous attention to motif clarity and color distribution.

Materials & Construction
Crafted from hand-spun Ghazni wool colored with natural vegetable dyes, the rug features a sophisticated palette of jewel tones—sapphire, ruby, emerald, and ivory—arranged in balanced geometric harmony. Ghazni wool—prized for its superior fiber length, resilience, and ability to hold vibrant dyes—creates a dense pile with exceptional tactile depth. The fine knotting (high knot density) ensures crisp motif definition essential to Mamluk aesthetics, while the wool's natural luster enhances the intricate pattern work.

Design & Aesthetic
The radiating medallion structure creates visual movement from center to border, with interlocking geometric forms that reward close inspection. This design pairs beautifully with gallery-like interiors—plaster walls, stone floors, minimal furnishings—where the rug can command attention as a centerpiece. The generous 8.2' × 9.8' scale (approximately 80 square feet) makes it ideal for anchoring living rooms, dining areas, or formal spaces.

Dimensions & Care
Measures 8.2' × 9.8'. Suitable for high-traffic areas; the dense Ghazni wool construction ensures decades of use. Professional cleaning recommended to preserve color vibrancy.

One-of-a-kind.
